Mid-Event Camera Connection Troubleshooting Guide

Use this guide if the camera stops responding, disconnects, or is no longer detected by the photo booth app during an event. These steps are designed to help you quickly refresh the camera connection and get the booth running again.

Before You Start

Stay calm and work through the steps in order. Most camera connection issues during an event are caused by the app temporarily losing communication with the camera, the camera going idle, a loose cable, or a camera setting being changed.

Avoid changing multiple settings at once. Test the camera after each step so you can identify what fixed the issue.

1. Close and Reopen the Photo Booth App

Start with the quickest reset.

Close the photo booth app completely, then reopen it and test the camera again.

Sometimes the app may temporarily lose communication with the camera during use. Restarting the app can refresh the connection without needing to adjust the full setup.

2. Check the Camera Cable

Make sure the camera cable is fully plugged into the camera and has not been bumped loose during the event.

The cable must be a true data cable, not a charging-only cable. Some USB cables only provide power and do not transfer data. If the cable is charge-only, the iPad may not detect the camera.

If available, try another known working data cable.

Check for the following:

  • Cable is firmly connected to the camera.
  • Cable is not bent, damaged, or loose.
  • Cable has not been pulled or bumped during the event.
  • Cable is a data cable, not charge-only.

3. Check App Permissions and Camera Selection

On the iPad, go to:

Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera

Make sure the photo booth app has permission to access the camera.

Then open the photo booth app and check the app’s internal camera settings. Confirm that the correct camera option is selected.

If the wrong camera source is selected, the app may not trigger the connected camera correctly.

4. Confirm the Camera Is Powered On

Make sure the camera is turned on and staying powered on.

Check the following:

  • The camera display turns on normally.
  • The battery is charged, or the dummy battery is properly connected.
  • The power adapter is securely connected if using a dummy battery.
  • The camera is not shutting off shortly after powering on.

If the camera keeps turning off, the issue may be related to the battery, dummy battery, or power connection.

5. Wake the Camera Back Up

If the camera has gone idle, gently press the shutter button halfway or power the camera off and back on.

After the camera wakes back up, return to the photo booth app and test again.

Camera sleep or auto power-off settings can sometimes interrupt communication between the camera and the app during an event.

6. Check the Camera Screen for Errors

Look at the camera screen and make sure there are no warning messages.

Common things to check:

  • SD card is inserted.
  • Battery warning is not showing.
  • Camera is not in playback mode.
  • Camera is not in video mode.
  • Camera is not displaying an error message.

An SD card is required for many camera setups to function properly. If the SD card is missing or not being read, the camera may not work correctly with the photo booth app.

7. Confirm Camera Settings and Reset If Needed

Make sure the camera is still set up correctly for photo booth use.

Recommended settings:

  • Camera is set to Manual mode.
  • Auto power-off is turned off or extended.
  • Camera is in photo mode, not video mode.
  • Camera is not in playback mode.
  • Exposure Simulation, also shown as Expo. Simulation on some cameras, is disabled.

For Canon EOS R100, Canon EOS R50, and similar Canon mirrorless cameras, verify that Exposure Simulation is turned off. If Exposure Simulation is enabled, it can interfere with photo booth operation and camera triggering.

If you are unsure whether the camera settings were changed, perform a camera settings reset and then reapply the recommended photo booth settings. After resetting, confirm that Exposure Simulation remains disabled before testing the camera again.

If the camera settings were accidentally changed during the event, the photo booth app may stop detecting or triggering the camera properly.

8. Restart the Setup

If the camera is still not detected, perform a quick restart.

Follow this order:

  1. Close the photo booth app.
  2. Turn the camera off.
  3. Restart the iPad.
  4. Turn the camera back on.
  5. Reopen the photo booth app.
  6. Test the camera again.

This can refresh the connection between the iPad, the app, and the camera.

9. If the Issue Continues

If the camera still does not connect after completing these steps, switch to a backup option if available and contact technical support for further assistance.

For support, you can contact us through one of the following options:

  • Call ATA Photobooths at 888-530-6661
  • Reply to your current support email thread
  • Visit our Knowledge Base for additional setup and troubleshooting resources
  • Schedule a tech support appointment if further assistance is needed

Please note that while we always do our best to assist as quickly as possible, immediate support may or may not be available during a live event. For this reason, we strongly recommend reviewing this guide before events and having a backup plan ready whenever possible.

When reaching out, please provide the following details:

  • Photo booth app being used
  • Camera model
  • iPad model
  • Whether the camera was working earlier during the event
  • Any error messages shown on the camera or app
  • What step the issue started on or what changed before the issue happened

Providing these details helps support narrow down whether the issue is related to the app, camera settings, cable, power, or camera communication.
